Harriet the Spy came out in 1996, and I loved it. I loved it so much, I wanted to be just like her. Having already attained aspirations of being a world-class detective, I decided that it was time I donned my own cool spy notebook so I went with my friend Heather to the store and bought one.
I wrote on the cover "Secret Detective Notebook," although I'm not sure why I couldn't have been more secretive about it. Anyway... One of my favorite things to do at this time in my life was to carry my composition notebook down the alleys close to my house. I dug through people's trash--finding breakup letters, keys and empty chocolate boxes and peeked inside the windows of houses where I thought things might "go down." Yes, I'm sure many privacy laws were violated, but what other choices do you have when you're a secret spy? I still have that love for mystery, only now I don't try to solve petty neighborhood cases, or any cases for that matter. I wish I could find that notebook! I think I even drew pictures...
I've decided to pay tribute to my strange obsession with spydom and have decided to be Harriet the Spy for Halloween. All I need is a yellow raincoat, a magnifying glass, black Chuck Taylor's, official composition notebook and an eye for the peculiar.
In doing a google search on my costume, this face came up:
And I realized that it's our little Harriet M. Welsch all grown up-- and not only that, but she played Sarah Michelle Gellar's sister on Buffy!
Harriet M. Welsch: "I want to remember everything. And I want to know everything."
Ole Golly: "Well, you must realize, Harriet, knowing everything won't do you a bit of good unless you use it to put beauty in this world. True or false?"
Harriet M. Welsch: "True."
Ole Golly: "Of course it is."

Absolutely! That's a fantastic idea.
I also wanted to be just like her, but I spied mostly on my siblings. That had the possibility to yield juicy results, for sure.
What are you doing for Hallow's Eve?
My friend Erin was obsessed with her too. She's still fond of tomato sandwiches.
And I am going to be Nancy Drew for Halloween! We can be sleuths together!
I've never heard of her! I love that you would sneak in alleys and peek into people's houses...I want to do that right now. maybe you could teach me how to sneak around.
Oh wait. I know why I never did that! Because my ankle pops and I always said I could never be a spy because I would make noise!
When you told me this last night, I was picturing Nancy Drew!!! Sorry about all the advice on the black flats, white tights, magnifying glass, and trench-coat =) Obviously I was more into the American Girl series...
I love all the fans here!
Rachel-- Perhaps with the knowledge you obtained from your siblings' lives, you were able to tattle better?
Bridget-- That's so great! Are you going to be a modern or more classic version of Nancy Drew? I loved her, too... read all the books.
Reagan-- It's okay. You can still get around the bodily noises to be a good spy. I'll teach you. Let's go out sometime and practice our sleuthing skills together.
Tricia-- HAHA! That is so funny! When you said all those things, I was thinking maybe I just hadn't seen the movie in a while and I was really confused.
Rachel, I realized I didn't answer your question: I really want to go trick-or-treating, actually! Haha! Okay, I haven't been in years, but I really would like to score some candy. Perhaps I can have a tall person take me around-- I'm sure with my height it wouldn't be a problem. But I also don't have any plans-- I would have expected to hear about a costume party by now, but I haven't... soo... I'm still not sure.
AH! I loved Harriet the Spy. I had a big crush on that boy...what was his name? Something different....
Anyway, I was way into American Girls too...
What a genius idea...I have no idea what I'll be...you got me thinking though.
aww, LeAnn. I love that characteristic about you. You are mysterious. Yet, so tender :) I remember that notebook oh so well. I thought id seen it in the basement..
She does look so grown up! Oh my gosh, i just remember you and Heather getting all into that movie. :) ha! so many good memories with that. That would be an awesome costume. Good choice.
Now youve gotta help me find one! Maybe I should be Pam on Office...
