Art Auction + Book Suggestions

Tonight I helped out at the gallery auction in the Union tonight. The mirrors that were displayed in the upstairs gallery for the last month were auctioned off tonight and it was a lot of fun! I hadn't ever helped with an auction, let alone even been to one before and it was pretty exciting. Two other work-study students besides myself carried the mirrors around to each table as they were up for bidding. I got to be the Vannah White of mirrors as the auctioneers went crazy trying to stir up the rich to hand over the big dollars. The highest mirror that sold tonight went for over $550! This was a fundraiser to support the museum and the art lab, so tickets to this event were not cheap. I got to wear a pretty dress and help myself to a glass of wine at the open bar and some fancy desserts when I got done displaying the mirrors. It was also enjoyable to see other gallery workers since I rarely get to interact with them.

I really would like a good book to read, so I am taking open suggestions here on my blog. I'm really up for anything-- fantasty, adventure, theology, a biography, non-fiction, something Donald Miller-ish-- Really just a book that you personally love and would recommend! So, please-- shout them out.

"Atonement Child" by Francine Rivers

"Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers

(Christian authors)

I've heard that there's a new series out called the "Twilight Series" ? I want to check it out but I'm not sure what it is...I heard something about vampires? Do you know about it?

Hehe, that's funny, Reagan. :)

I love To Kill A Mockingbird, but I bet you've read that. Also, Hiding Place.

Jono and I have also been enjoying the Artemis Fowl series. It's kinda a fantastic fiction, but not at all as good as HP. But...what is?

Okay, I just remembered another series that Jere loved and I like too. It's called the "Redwall Series". If you're not into animals talking and stuff like that then you won't like it but I liked it a lot. The author is Brian Jacques.

Why, Reagan, I have NOT heard of these Twilight books you speak of. Simply WHERE did you hear about them??? HAHAHA! Nice...

And I have actually read both of those Francine River books, both excellent reads, although Redeeming Love is one of my favorites.

I looked up a Buechner book that sounded interesting and bought it on Amazon for 30 cents. Score!

Oh, and I absolutely do not mind animals talking so I should check those out, too.

Thanks, guys!

Okay. I am a loser. I forgot that you had mentioned the Twilight series and instead thought that I heard of it through my sister in law....she IS reading it right now and is addicted. I am sorry for being SUCH a loser!! I was confused when Rachel thought what I said was funny and then Lena wrote something about it too and I knew I had to research your blog.....LOL

I want to start reading it since I've heard it's so interesting. do you have the books or did you borrow them from the library?

Reagan, and here I thought you were just being sarcastic-- I just misinterpreted your words. You are not a loser! :)

I'm a little obsessed about the Twilight series... I only have the first book and fourth book, and I borrowed the other ones from another obsessed friend. The movie that's based on the first book comes out next month!

Hmmmmm...maybe you should get a group together to go see it... :) (including me)

sweet! and sometime in your life, get a hold of anne lamott.. this is what donald miller says of her on his website:

When I started writing [blue like jazz] I just wanted to end up with something like Anne Lamott's Traveling Mercies, because in Traveling Mercies it felt like she was free, free to be herself, to tell her story, to just vent, to rant, to speak as if she were talking to a friend. Traveling Mercies helped me write this book, and in a way, for a while, Anne will be "The Beatles" of spiritual writers, because she has influenced so many of us. I definitely feel as though I got permission from Anne Lamott, permission to be human and to interact with God without all of the mind-melt that comes with growing up in a religious family.

Wow, now I really want to read that! I love Donald Miller so much, so if he's saying that he was inspired by her, I must check this out.
